Art in Lobbies: From Other Worlds – New York

SARAHCROWN is pleased to announce From Other Worlds, a two-person exhibition conceived for the public spaces at The Yard–Columbus Circle as part of the Art In Lobbies program. The installation will feature a selection of recent works by Darcy Gerbarg and Anne Senstad.

As the title From Other Worlds suggests, the works in this project, although showing the semblances of traditional art-making techniques such as painting and printing, have been conceived in non-traditional environments and transported to our reality, offer an exciting glimpse into contemporary art practices that use technology and new media for artistic creation.

Gerbarg exploits the functionality of computer graphics software and digital image making tools by putting on 3DVR goggles and making expressive, often whimsical gestures in explosions of color, referencing both the natural and built environments. Her hands and body perform physical gestures, in a three-dimensional virtual world, where she surrounds herself with brush strokes of colored light. Then, with a variety of digital imaging techniques, Gerbarg takes sections of this colorful, 3D virtual painting and creates impactful, moving, human scale, pictures on canvas.

Senstad’s photographic works explore the intersection of technology, spatiality, and photographic processes through the nature of light and color, a phenomenology of perception and reduction of volume to a potential. Transforming and identifying space with synesthetic color projections, the solidified colors into corners and architectural narratives create a re-imagined outline for the envisioned light sculptures as a spectral volume in space. In these photographic works she explores the process of outlining architectural space, utilizing digitally collaged color negatives into patterns and maps for her potential light sculptures and recreates her spatial studies into a final plan where kinaesthetic colors are arrested in time where process meets a solid abstraction.

The exhibition spans three floors (2nd, 11th, and 12th floor) and will be accessible until July 21, 2018.

Darcy Gerbarg

Gerbarg is a third-generation abstract expressionist painter, who early in her creative practice (1979), started working with digital tools. She was a visiting artist in several of the first computer graphics and 3D animation research facilities.

Her latest body of work, The Syracuse Pictures, are digital from start to finish, created, informed and controlled by Gerbarg’s physical gestures and sensibilities. They begin as colored light in a 3D virtual environment: colorful, expressive paint strokes that Gerbarg further develops into works on canvas.

Gerbarg has been a Senior Fellow at the Columbia Institute for Tele Information (CITI), Columbia University Business School since 1997 and past Executive Director of The Marconi Society, Inc.  She is currently the Director of Operations for CineGrid, Inc. whose members conduct experiments with very large media files over fiber optic networks, immersive environments including Caves, and advanced audio technologies.

From 1980 to 2013 she was an adjunct professor and consultant at several universities. Her introduction to digital media, 1979 through the mid 1980’s, she was working as an artist in the research labs, including Magi SynthaVision and NYIT, that were developing the first computer graphics software tools: paint systems, 3D modeling, 2D and 3D computer animation.

Currently, Gerbarg is also as Associate Editor for the International Journal of Digital Television, and series editor for The Economics of Information, Communication and Entertainment: The Impacts of Digital Technology in the 21st Century, with Springer.

Anne Senstad

New York based Norwegian artist Anne Senstad was educated at Parsons School of Design and The New School for Social Research in New York. Senstad’s practice is defined as transformational functioning in the intersections of immersive installation art, photography, video, neon sculptures, technology and time based art, and site specificity, with a focus on the phenomena, aesthetic and perception of light, sound and color, as well as her socially engaged critical text based works resting on the language of ethics, literature and philosophy.

Notable international exhibitions include 55th, 56th and 57th Venice Biennale, Bruges Art and Architecture Triennale 2015, Bærum Kunsthall, Trafo Kunsthall, SALT, K4 Galleri and Kunsthall 31,4 in Norway, Bjorn Ressle Gallery, Elga Wimmer, Fiterman Art Center and Gary Snyder Gallery in New York, KK Projects in conjunction with Prospect 1 in New Orleans, Zendai Moma in Shanghai and ATHR Gallery in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Her video work has been shown at Centre Pompidou, Haus Der Kultur Der Welt, Berlin, Beirut Art Center, Lebanon, The Canadian Museum of Nature, Museum of Modern Art Ukraine, Kiev, Dallas Aurora TX, Video Arte Internacional Buenos Aires, Oslo Screen Festival and ISEA Dubai 2014.
