Opening May 30: Alex Yudzon ‘A Room for the Night’

Hotel rooms are generally weird places, charged with both loneliness and the illusion of a known domestic environment. They are a home away from home but offer none of the release of the real thing and ultimately belong to no one. This twin aspect of travel, the need for both the familiar and the foreign is the starting point for A Room for the Night.

By turning the architectural elements, furniture (or other objects) that he finds in the rooms that he inhabits during his travels into a temporary construct, Yudzon creates transitory site-specific interventions that are ultimately photographed before being deconstructed. The resultant photographs are a mixture of humor, absurdity and the longing for intimacy.

Yuzdon will create for both exhibitions, in addition to the existing series, new works by interacting with the local environments encountered during his travel.

‘A Room for the Night’ encourages a conversation about the meaning of origins, home and belonging while at the same time questioning our personal relation to space, objects and desire.

Dates for the catalog presentation and a public program in relation to Yudzon’s artistic research (film screenings, book readings and artist talk) will be released soon.

‘A Room for the Night’ is the first exhibition by Russian – American artist Alex Yudzon in Italy and will open in May at LABottega Gallery, Pietrasanta (Italy). In the Fall of 2015, ‘A Room for the Night’ will travel for its US premiere at sarahcrown, New York.
